As people, we endeavor to understand the world around us. We use our knowledge of design, the power of data, and cutting-edge technologies to create powerful tools to solve complexity.

Our Story

Datawheel was born as a spin-off of The MIT Media Lab in 2013. It started as a result of a passion to understand complex problems based on big data and make them accessible for the world.

César Hidalgo, a scientist in the world of Complex Systems, teamed with Alex Simoes, a developer capable of creating a software solution that helped distribute this valuable information. The last part of the puzzle was Dave Landry, who made this software easy to understand for the broader audience through the use of content design and powerful visualizations.

Since then, Datawheel has been developing online platforms with partners around the world. Starting with the Observatory of Economic Complexity and Data USA, we then expanded to partner with the many public and private sector organizations, resulting in platforms such as: DataChile, DataAfrica, DataEstonia, as well as platforms for private sector organizations including Estee Lauder, Verizon and Deloitte.

Today, Datawheel continues to be managed by its founders, Dave Landry, César Hidalgo, and Alexander Simoes. It has grown into a team of more than 27 professional designers and developers that work all over the world.
